Description:
Erect herb, with an unbranched stem, up to 25 cm high, ribbed, mostly hairless except for short pubescence in the inflorescence region. Leaves subsessile to shortly petiolate, crowded towards the base of the stem, lanceolate to elliptic, 20–45 mm long, hairless, veins prominent beneath; margin serrate–crenate, slightly rolled under. Flowers in a dense raceme, mostly up to 3 cm long but sometimes longer, shortly pubescent; bracts up to 10 mm long, dentate. Calyx with lobes narrowly triangular, erect, 3·2–5·6 mm long, with 1–2 pairs of teeth at the margin. Corolla c. 8 mm long, pale pink, darker purple towards the base, tubular with 5 subequal lobes c. 4 mm long, tube shortly pubescent on the outside and on the inside towards the base, lobes papillose on both sides.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: nyikensis of Nyika Plateau in Malawi.
Habitat: In shallow soils overlying rock.
Altitude range: 2250 - 2400 m
