Description:	Erect annual herb up to 40cm tall. Leaves alternate, lyrate-pinnatilobed, up to 10cm long, sometimes becoming purplish when older. Inflorescence often dichotomously branching, with 3 to 6 stalked urn-shaped capitula. Capitula 30-60-flowered, outer florets female; inner florets are bisexual, purple, scarlet, red, pink, orange, white, or lilac. Achenes oval, reddish brown or off-white, with a pappus of white hairs up to 8 mm long.

Derivation of specific name:	sonchifolia: with leaves like a Sonchus, another genus in Asteraceae.
Habitat:	Usually as a weed of cultivated and disturbed areas.
