Synonyms: Cotoneaster angustifolia Planch.
Common names: Yellow firethorn (English)
Frequency:
Status: Introduced
Description:
Spiny shrub, up to 4 m high, sometimes prostrate. Leaves clustered on spiny side branches, narrowly oblong to narrowly oblanceolate, 2-5 cm long, dark green and becoming hairless above, greyish-hairy beneath; apex obtuse, mucronulate; margin rolled under, entire or obscurely toothed towards apex. Flowers in dense hairy headsc. 8 mm wide, white. Fruit subspherical, 6-8 mm in diameter, orange to brick-red.
Notes: It was introduced as an ornamental(?) not for the flowers, which are small, but for the masses of bright orange berries. Around Chelinda Camp, Nyika it is known as an occasional escape into the wild. It is not a problem species (yet) but in the South African highveld it is known as an aggressive invader into grassland, hillsides and erosion channels.
