Description:
Robust climber, up to 15 m tall. Stems woody with whitish, short appressed hairs, densely so when young. Leaves broadly ovate-cordate to almost circular, 3.5 - 17 cm long, thinly pubescent above, densely whitish or greyish hairy beneath; margin entire; petiole ip to 12 cm long, slender, densely hairy. Inflorescences few- to many-flowered, 3-10 cm long in the axils of upper leaves, together forming lax terminal heads, sometimes pseudo-umbellate. Flowers white, widely funnel-shaped. Fruit broadly ellipsoid to somewhat obovoid, shortly beaked, densely greyish hairy, indehiscent.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: shirensis: of the Shire Highlands in Malawi where the type specimen was collected.
Habitat: In sandy soil in woodland, grassland, along forest margins and roadsides.
Altitude range: Up to 1100 m

Worldwide distribution: Angola, DRC, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mpumalanga, South Africa.
