See the more widespread var. senegalensis for general details. This variety is distinguished by the erectly held leaves that are all sessile.

Derivation of specific name: sessiliflora: flowers without stalks
Habitat: Lake and river sides, marshes, swamps, dambos and other wet grasslands.
Altitude range: Up to 1610 m
