Common names: Large pink gardenia (English)
Status: Native
Small, slender tree. Leaves opposite, crowded near the ends of branches, large, up to 25 cm, elliptic to obovate, thickly leathery. Flowers large, c. 13 cm in diameter, white flushed with pink or greenish-red. Fruit ellipsoid, crowned with the old calyx lobes, yellowish to brown.
Derivation of specific name: imperialis: imperial, kingly
Habitat: In evergreen riverine and swamp forest.
Altitude range: Up to 1220 m
Flowering time:Aug - Feb
Worldwide distribution: Widespread in tropical Africa.
