Description:
Erect perennial herb, up to 1.2 m tall, growing from a woody rootstock. Stem single or branching from the base, ribbed, pubescent, often tinged red when dried. Leaves alternate, very variable but always deeply pinnately divided, lobes often divided again; pubescent on both surfaces, usually with denser appressed hairs beneath especially on the midrib; margins entire, thickened or rolled under. Capitula 5-8 mm in diameter, in axillary or terminal, branched clusters or solitary. Florets discoid only, yellow. Pappus absent.
Notes:
Derivation of specific name: crataegifolium: with leaves like an Crataegus, a genus of shrubs or trees in Rosaceae, found in the temperate Northern Hemisphere.
Habitat: In grassland and woodland, often in rocky places
Altitude range: 300 - 2500 m
