Description:	A variable perennial with radiating stems from a woody rootstock. Stems may be prostrate or twining. Three varieties are recognised in Zimbabwe, mainly distinguished by leaf shape. Var. sagittatus and var. aschersonii are widespread in Zimbabwe, while var. phyllosepalus is restricted to the montane grasslands of the Eastern Highlands.
